Accessibility

Online Wise is built to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. This page sets out what that means in practice, what we have tested, and what we know still needs work.

How the site is built

  • Semantic HTML throughout, with a single H1 per page and headings in order.
  • A skip-to-content link as the first tab stop on every page, so a keyboard user never has to tab through the whole navigation.
  • Every colour pairing used for text meets a 4.5:1 contrast ratio, and large text and interface boundaries meet 3:1. The values in the design tokens were chosen for those ratios rather than adjusted to reach them.
  • Text can be enlarged to 200% without loss of content or function, and the layout reflows to a single column at 320px.
  • All animation is disabled under prefers-reduced-motion.
  • Illustrations are decorative and hidden from assistive technology. Every illustration is accompanied by real text that carries the same meaning.
  • Search is a plain form, so it works with JavaScript disabled.

Known limitations

We would rather tell you these than have you find them:

  • The site has not yet been audited by an independent accessibility specialist, and has not been tested with a full range of assistive technology.
  • Article images supplied through the editorial system depend on editors writing accurate alternative text. Where a description is missing, the image is treated as decorative rather than described badly.
  • Some third-party resources linked from the Get help page are outside our control and may not meet the same standard.
